In a step toward maritime decarbonization, Burando Energies, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), and World Fuel Services have entered into a strategic collaboration to supply sustainable marine fuels during port stays in the Netherlands for NCLH’s three brands – Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. This marks a significant milestone in the cruise industry’s transition toward low-emission operations that will be fulfilled during the European season in 2025. The NCLH vessel portfolio includes Norwegian Prima along with five other vessels across the fleet receiving biofuel blends.

Each delivery features a 30% blend of ISCC-certified, waste-based biodiesel, achieving a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to conventional marine fuels. The blend was used as a drop-in fuel, fully compatible with existing engine infrastructure and operational protocols, demonstrating both its practicality and immediate impact.

This initiative aligns directly with NCLH’s long-term decarbonization strategy, together with its Sail & Sustain™ program. Through this program NCLH continues to demonstrate environmental leadership by investing in cleaner fuel alternatives and integrating them across its global fleet.

On the supply side, Burando Energies served as the physical supplier and logistics partner, leveraging its expertise in fuel handling and blending. Its fleet of barges, including some equipped for green methanol and other sustainable marine fuels, ensures reliable, high-quality bunkering services tailored to the evolving needs of the maritime sector.

World Fuel Services acted as the project facilitator by ensuring seamless coordination and execution across all parties. With deep industry knowledge and global reach, World Fuel Services continues to support maritime stakeholders in adopting sustainable fuel solutions that meet international regulatory and environmental expectations.

This collaboration offers a scalable, actionable pathway for cruise lines and fuel providers to jointly reduce maritime emissions. By delivering sustainable marine fuels that are available today, Burando Energies, NCLH, and World Fuel Services are taking tangible steps to support the broader decarbonization strategy in the shipping industry.
